Two jailed for armed robbery
TWO armed robbers were convicted on two counts of armed robbery each, and sentenced to 15 years imprisonment on each count, at the Scottburgh Regional Court. The sentences are to run concurrently. On December 13, 2013 the two men, Khulekani Dlamini (31) and Nhlanhla Pa Shange (23), arrived at People’s Market in Main Street, Umzinto, just as the shop owner was closing for the day, drew their guns and demanded money. After robbing the victim of a considerable amount of money and two cellphones, they fled.
Police call on public to be vigilant
The Scottburgh SAPS management has called for the public, especially the residents of Pennington, to be vigilant of criminals who are stealing expensive wrought iron (metal) garden furniture. Furniture that is left out on patios, verandahs and in gardens is being carried out over the perimeter fences or by means of lifting electronic gates off their tracks. The stolen chairs, benches and tables are probably being transported by bakkie, as they are too heavy and bulky to be carried by hand. Do not ignore suspicious noises, the sound of vehicles or your dogs barking, especially at night. Be alert during the day as well, as shameless criminals take advantage of the fact that many are at work and nobody is home. Take note of the registration plate and description of suspicious vehicles in the neighbourhood. This kind of information in crucial for police to identify and trace suspects.
Three face rape, murder charges
THREE suspects have been arrested for allegedly murdering a nun of the Sacred Heart Covenant in Ixopo. The KZN police made the breakthrough arrest on Monday, April 27. The three men allegedly entered an elderly woman’s residence on April 18 where they tied her hands with a typewriter cable and covered her face with a towel, which caused her to suffocate. It is also suspected that before being killed, 86-year-old, Getrud Tiefebacher was raped. The suspects fled with stolen goods and foreign currency and were found with property belonging to the deceased upon arrest. The accused, aged between 25 and 35, will appear in the Ixopo Magistrates’ Court on April 29, facing charges of house robbery, murder and rape.
