A SCOTTBURGH man has sent out a strong message to intruders: “Some of us will fight back!”
Herbie Webster ducked a bullet and then chased two armed men out of his home last Thursday night.
Unfortunately, Herbie did not escape entirely unscathed. He slipped and fell during the chase, suffering a huge bruise, two broken ribs, a punctured lung and a broken toe.
Their security firm (Magma) responded to the panic alarm within three minutes and the SAPS arrived on the scene two minutes later.
Two men were later arrested in connection with the burglary. Herbie’s wife, Audrey, described the scene as “so, so scary”.
She was about to dish up dinner at about 7.30pm when two men came through the unlocked kitchen door.
“One of them put his finger to his lips and indicated that I must keep quiet,” said Audrey.
“Well, I just screamed blue murder. He came at me, I think to try to shut me up and he grabbed me around the neck. I just kept screaming.”
Meanwhile, Herbie and their Labrador, Bruno, heard the noise and rushed to her rescue. One of the intruders aimed a pistol and fired a shot.
“Luckily it missed them both. God was looking after all of us because by then my husband got to him and, faced with Bruno as well, the man took fright.
“They both turned, ran out of the house and jumped over the wall into the vacant plot next door.”
She thanked Magma and the SAPS for their quick response.
