A TOTAL of 12 171 criminals were arrested during Operation Fiela, a crime-busting swoop recently carried out in KwaZulu-Natal.
The joint operation, involving SAPS, SANDF, Department of Home Affairs and Metro Police, aimed to ‘target those areas which harbor criminals and to seize dangerous weapons, illegal firearms, stolen goods and drugs that are in the hands of the criminals, as well as to arrest wanted suspects’.
Since the inception of the operation police have arrested 223 suspects for murder, 137 for possession of unlicensed firearms, 169 for rape, 146 for robberies, house breaking, possession of drugs, stock theft, theft, assault, fraud, kidnapping, stock theft and other cases.
These suspects have appeared in various courts in the province to face criminal charges. During the operation, drugs, liquor, cellphones, jewellery, counterfeit goods, electronic appliances, firearms and ammunition were recovered.
The KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner, Lieutenant General Mmamonnye Ngobeni, applauded the all role-players for the arrest of criminals throughout the province.
“These operation have yielded positive results and we are very proud of the hard wok displayed by all those involved. We will continue with these operations to ensure that those who break the law are brought to book,” she said.
