N2 ‘terrorists’ strike

TRAVELLING on the N2 is like running the gauntlet again with at least two more motorists pelted with stones and rocks recently.

One of them, a Warner Beach woman, was lucky to escape with her life when a massive rock thrown from the Hull Road bridge smashed her windscreen last week.

This was followed by a Scottburgh resident being bombarded with balls made out of stone, cement and mud near Hibberdene on Monday morning.

The Scottburgh motorist (who did not want to be named) was on her way to Port Shepstone when there was a sudden bang and said she thought her tyre had burst.

“I had one heck of a fright,” she said; “I slowed down and then saw another two missiles coming.”

The first had hit her passenger side window and, luckily, the other two missed.

She said she was so terrified she didn’t even see who had thrown the projectiles and only stopped to inspect her car when she reached Port Shepstone.

This seems to be an on-going problem and police and RTI are at a loss on how to solve it.

Even high fencing installed on bridges spanning the highway doesn’t seem to deter the highway ‘terrorists’.

Police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid has appealed to motorists to be extra vigilant when driving, especially at night, and also for victims to report incidents immediately. The sooner officers are dispatched, she says, the better the chances of catching the culprits.

With holiday traffic in full flow, the problem is a huge concern for tourism authorities.
