Quick action gets stolen vehicle back

Officers recovered two stolen vehicles in separate incidents.

A STOLEN vehicle was returned to its rightful owner thanks to great team work by members of the community and the police yesterday morning.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said a 51-year-old man had reported that his vehicle had been stolen from his Canterbury Road, Hibberdene home on Sunday night.

“A description of the stolen vehicle was circulated and some time later a fisherman spotted the  vehicle  hidden in the bushes near the railway line at Mtwalume beach,” she said.

Eugene Halliday, founder of the AZASOS Whatsapp group in Hibberdene, said the fisherman, who is a member of the group, phoned Tanya Pelser, co-director of AZASOS, and told her of his find.  Mr Halliday notified the police and went and guarded the vehicle.

John Irven of CSO Cop and Warrant Officer Christo Mostert from Port Shepstone Crime Intelligence  also responded.

Detective Sergeant Eugene Blankenberg from the Hibberdene Task Team is investigating the theft.

In another incident, two men were arrested in the Mzamba area on Sunday night by Sergeant Stanley Holloway and Constable Khethukula Nkomo from the K9 unit  after the officers received information about a vehicle stolen earlier from the Umlazi area.

Lt-Col Wiid said the two K9 unit officers were assisted by Warrant Officer Hendrik Ludick, Sergeant Rudi Smit, Constable Sibusiso Cele and Constable Zonwabele Mpofana, who were doing highway patrol duties in the 10111 call centre response vehicle.
