Batstones Drift killers still at large
Police are still investigating the drive-by shooting which occurred at Batstones Drift last week.
POLICE are still looking for the killers of a 29-year-old man who was shot at Batstone’s Drift, near Umtentweni, last Tuesday. Police believe the gunmen might have mistaken him for someone else.
Four others were also injured in the collision with two oncoming vehicles after being surprised by the shooting.
Occupants of a silver car opened fire with heavy calibre firearms as they were travelling past a silver bakkie being driven by Steven Patterson of Uvongo at about 7pm.
He was killed and two passengers were wounded in the shoot-out.
A man and a woman in one of the other vehicles were injured in the crash.
Mr Patterson is formerly from Pietermaritzburg and was working as a mechanic on the South Coast.
Several cartridges were found at the scene.
Yesterday (Wednesday) police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said the motive for the shooting was still unknown.
“Police believed that this drive-by shooting was possibly a mistaken identity,”said Lt-Col Wiid.
Mr Patterson’s funeral will be held next Friday, November 27, in Pietermaritzburg.
