Cosatu shouts: ‘Away with slavery’

Cosatu members join hands to fight against worker exploitation.

MEMBERS of the Congress of South African Trade Unions’ (COSATU) Port Sepstone branch braved rainy weather on Friday to march against poor working conditions and labour brokers.

The march started at Chris Hani Square and continued through town to the civic centre where a memorandum of demands and grievances was handed over to the mayor of Ugu district municipality, Cllr Ntombifikile Gumede.

Chairman of the union Ernest Mkhize said: “We are here to fight against poor working conditions and the exploitation of workers. We want to raise awareness and say ‘no’ to labour brokers. We also want the expanded public works programme to be reviewed.”

Other burning issues contained in the memorandum were:

* Employers tended to override shop stewards;

* The banning of security tenders with the intention of creating secure employment in the security industry.

* Cosatu also wanted issues of social responsibility to be addressed;

* The creation of a passenger railway that covered the Lower South Coast area.

* Placards depicted: ‘Away with Slavery of Workers’.
