Coast is more than just Blue Flag beaches
Ugu South Coast Tourism has trained unemployed people as tour guides.
WITH the exchange rate what it is, the South Coast, with its famed Blue Flag beaches, is probably one of the finer and most inexpensive holiday destinations in the world.
Well, Ugu South Coast Tourism believes that, is optimistic and wants to make sure we are ready just in case there is a flood of foreign tourists wanting more bang for their pound, dollar, franc, or euro.
Recently, they recruited 25 unemployed people from various rural areas and trained them as tourist guides to cater for those wanting more than just fun in the sun.
They are now fully qualified and registered to operate as nature and culture specialists on the coast.
Maxwell Mhlongo, development coordinator for Ugu South Coast Tourism, said 19 of the trainees had already started operating last year.
“It is important for tourists to experience both coastal and hinterland experiences when visiting our destination. Our guides are passionate about what they do and they are determined to make every tourist’s experience a memorable one,” he said.
They will also be working hard at linking urban and rural tourism.
“Tourists will enjoy facilities available in the rural areas, experience culture and buy products available, so communities will benefit as well.”
Safety is also paramount.
Some of the inland areas worth a visit are: Isivivane SikaShaka, Ntelezi Msane Heritage Centre in uMzumbe, Nyandezulu Waterfall, Ntantana Mountains in Nyandezulu, KwaXolo Caves, KwaFodo Cultural Village and many more. They can also buy products from local crafters, visit traditional healers and local communities to experience the culture and hospitality.
Tourist guides are listed in the Southern Explorer Route Guide and on Ugu South Coast Tourism website, www.tourismsouthcoast.co.za
