Second ATM robbery ‘grinds’ to a halt

Police investigated after hearing noises.

IN the early hours of yesterday (Wednesday) morning, alert Gamalakhe SAPS officers stopped another attempt to break into an ATM.

The officers heard noises at a shop and went to investigate.  As they approached, they saw people moving off.

“Further investigation revealed that the perpetrators had gained entry through the roof of the building and had already deactivated the alarm system,” said police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid.

“It would appear that they had attempted to cut open two ATM safes with angle grinders, but abandoned the mission when they heard the police approaching,” she said.
