10-year-old child raped

The assaults took place on more than one occasion.

BONGANI Charles Mdethi Xolo Radebe (41) of Port Edward has been sentenced to 15 years’ imprisonment for the rape of a 10-year-old child and three years for the exposure or display of pornography to children.

The sentence was handed down by Regional Magistrate Johann Bester.

In 2013, the child was raped on more than one occasion by Radebe, who lived in the area and was known to her.

The court heard that on one occasion he raped her in the lounge. On another occasion, the child was sick and didn’t go to school, so Radebe took her home where he raped her.

In August the following year, he had showed the same girl and her friend, aged eight, pornographic material that he had downloaded onto his phone.

Radebe was an unemployed, first time offender who suffered from tuberculosis. The state argued that Radebe had showed no remorse and while there were no physical injuries, the child had suffered emotionally.

“This is an impressively strong little girl, but the trauma is one that she will not forget,” said Magistrate Bester.
