Prophet of Doom for Mtwalume
A prophet of Doom may be needed to curb the threat of flies in Mtwalume and Hibberdene.
WITHOUT wanting to be a ‘Prophet of Doom’, northern areas of the Hibiscus Coast might just be invaded by flies this festive season, if Umdoni Municipality doesn’t ‘spray’ into action soon.
Our neighbouring municipality’s Humberdale waste site is packed to overflowing and is virtually covered with flies.
Hence, depending on the wind direction, areas as far as Mtwalume and Hibberdene could soon suffer a plague of the pesky summer critters.
One already has to fight one’s way through swarms of flies just to approach the Umdoni waste site.
Strange, but true: Umdoni Municipality was at one stage considering a proposal by a Durban company to accept imported waste from war-torn Lebanon for a handsome fee.
With the site now already overflowing without any help from Lebanon, the mind boggles. The municipal manager said this plan had now been dumped.
However, Umdoni officials and councillors are swatting their heads about what to do about the crisis. Exacerbating the problem, contractors who were in control quit because they were apparently not paid, according to our sister newspaper, the Rising Sun.
Solutions mooted so far are: To continue to compact the backlog of refuse as quickly as possible and consider the use of pesticides.
