Renowned environmentalist dies in accident near Umzinto

Dr Desmond D'Sa died in an accident on the R612 near Umzinto today.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) has confirmed the tragic death of its founder and coordinator, Dr Desmond D’Sa.

Reports indicate that D’Sa was involved in a fatal accident on the R612 near Umzinto earlier today (October 29), along with two other family members.

In an official statement, the SDCEA referred to D’Sa as a fearless champion for environmental justice, an unwavering voice for the marginalised, and a true hero of communities.

“His loss is an immeasurable blow not only to South Durban, but to the global environmental movement,” said the organisation.

“As we struggle to process this devastating tragedy, we ask that you keep his family, friends, and the SDCEA team in your thoughts and prayers.”

KwaZulu-Natal Premier Thamsanqa Ntuli has since expressed his sadness at the passing of Dr D’Sa, describing his death as a tremendous loss to KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa and the global environmental movement.

“Dr Desmond D’Sa was a courageous and principled activist who dedicated his life to fighting environmental injustice and defending the rights of ordinary people, particularly vulnerable communities exposed to industrial pollution. His passing leaves a huge void in the progressive environmental space, where his voice, leadership and unwavering commitment to justice will be deeply missed,” said Premier Ntuli.

“His was a life defined by service, sacrifice and an enduring determination to ensure that communities were not left to bear the burden of environmental harm in silence. He stood firm in his convictions, challenged powerful interests and consistently reminded us that environmental protection is inseparable from human dignity, public health and social justice.”

In July this year, Premier Ntuli personally recognised and honoured Dr D’Sa with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the KwaZulu-Natal Premier’s Excellence Awards, in acknowledgement of his outstanding contribution to environmental protection, community advocacy and social justice.
