WATCH: Call to take control of Margate’s beach crisis

"The horror of lawlessness has descended on towns," says Councillor Dave Watson, who calls for 'cool heads - strong arms - clear vision' when tackling this problem together.

LAST Friday’s clean-up of Margate beach has led to Councillor Dave Watson calling for an emergency meeting with senior authorities from Ray Nkonyeni Municipality by the end of business today.

The beach clean-up saw many local businesses and individuals coming together to spruce up Margate’s beachfront, ahead of the up-coming holiday season.

The move to make Margate great again, has been led by businessman Stephen Herbst and his team.

However the day after the big clean-up, broken glass, beer bottles and litter were again found strewn all over.

Cllr Watson, wrote on Facebook, that the outcome of today’s meeting has to be ‘a positive, practical plan of action that includes fairly drastic measures to take control of this crisis’.

If this meeting fails to occur or the authorities fail to implement the control measures that are now so urgent, then we will convene meetings with the businesses and residents where we discuss the next steps, – Dave Watson

This is a time for cool heads and professional action. The emergency is not of our making but it is our responsibility to the Ward as well as the economy of the whole municipality to adjust and implement strong measures – Dave Watson, Facebook

Cllr Watson added that activities and social chaos that plunge the community into lawlessness cannot and will not be tolerated. “Every single right is balanced with a responsibility, and we cannot just be keyboard warriors in this crisis.”

He went on to say that Margate is ‘the flagship tourism product that is so vital to the economy of Ray Nkonyeni Municipality’, and pointed out that Margate had already lost the ‘Varsity Opskop’, with the  hugely successful ‘Rage’ moving to the North Coast.
