He was shopping at the Oribi Plaza when he saw the smoke, caused by a fire that had broken out in the alleyway between the Herald office in Station Street, Port Shepstone, and the adjacent Nashua building.

A pile of wooden pallets, cardboard boxes and other packaging material stored in the alleyway had caught alight.

By the time Theunis had rushed to the scene, staff from both buildings had come outside to investigate and were on hand to assist him with fire fighting equipment.

Thanks to his calm but quick action the flames and noxious-smelling smoke were soon contained.

Minutes later, when Ray Nkonyeni Municipality firefighters arrived on the scene, some of the cardboard boxes were still smouldering but the fire had been almost completely extinguished. The cause of the fire is not known.

Formerly from Gauteng and now a South Coast resident, Theunis is no longer employed as a fire fighter. He did however, work for Johannesburg Metro Police for a number of years, during which he received his fire fighting training.
