South Coast Hospice receives generous centenary gift from Port Shepstone Lions
The R100 000 donation from Port Shepstone Lions will be well spent.
TO commemorate Lions International’s centenary year, the Lions Club of Port Shepstone allocated R100 000 to South Coast Hospice.
This funding was raised through the club’s annual Lions/Illovo Sugar Golf Day and annual South Coast Lions’ Show.
Approximately R30 000 was used to purchase a Hi Lo Flex Electric Function bed with a specialised mattress that prevents the formation of pressure (bed) sores.

This luxury bed has all the features of a hospital bed without the hospital look and boasts both an adjustable backrest and knee section, side protection bars and an overhead chain support.
An ultrasound scanner to the value of R52 000 was also purchased and donated. Bedside ultrasound scanning in a hospice setting is a relatively new initiative.
Historically, hospice had to refer patients to a hospital for ultrasound scans. Now all patients with possible ascites (the accumulation of fluid in the peritoneal cavity, causing abdominal swelling) can be scanned prior to drainage.

Bedside ultrasounds are non-invasive and well tolerated, aiding diagnosis for patients with suspected ascites, lung blockages or bladder problems.
The remainder of the funding will go towards the refurbishment of the Hospice Training Centre. In recognition of the ongoing support provided by the Port Shepstone Lions Club, South Coast Hospice decided to name one of their inpatient wards ‘The Lions’ Room’.
