Local ANC says it will support Cyril Ramaphosa

Prior to the conference, the LSC regional secretary Mzwandile Mkwanazi was criticised for openly backing Mr Ramaphosa while his region had been stripped of its powers.

THERE were mixed emotions from Lower South Coast (LSC) region ANC members as Cyril Ramaphosa was announced as the new ANC president on Monday this week.

Mr Ramaphosa was announced as the party’s new president, replacing Jacob Zuma at the ANC’s 54th elective national conference which took place at Nasrec Expo Centre in Johannesburg.

The five-day conference saw six members elected into the party’s top 6.

They are as follows: Cyril Ramaphosa (president), David Mabuza (deputy president), Ace Magashule (secretary-general), Gwede Mantashe (national chairman), Paul Mashatile (treasurer-general) and Jesse Duarte (deputy secretary-general).

Prior to the conference, the LSC regional secretary Mzwandile Mkwanazi was criticised for openly backing Mr Ramaphosa while his region had been stripped of its powers.

Mr Mkhwanazi said he was grateful to all those who backed him under difficult circumstances and applauded the provincial CR coordinator and his team for putting together a clean campaign.

A regional executive member said, although she had been supporting Dr Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma, she was happy for Mr Ramaphosa and would respect him as a leader.

“I’m an ANC member. I can’t allow factionalism to rule me. I will still campaign for Mr Ramaphosa in 2019,” she said.
