Hip-hop artist assaulted in Marburg shop over packet of expired chips

The muso was left with a nasty head injury.

His 28th birthday will be a memorable one for Ashwin Bens (Richie Bens) from ‘Hip-Hop Mzansi’, but for all the wrong reasons.

Ashwin said he was struck on the head on Saturday, January 20 after he complained about a packet of expired chips at a shop in Marburg.

According to police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid, Ashwin was struck with a stick, and suffered open wounds to his head.

An injured Ashwin Bens.

Ashwin said after he confronted the employee at the shop, in Watterson Street, Marburg, about the stale chips, the packet was thrown back at him and he was told: ‘You bought this, go with it.’

He admitted to throwing back the packet of open chips, before turning to leave.

That was when he felt a blow to his head.

“It was such a cowardly act as he hit me from behind. I was covered in blood.”

Ahwin Bens covered in blood after the incident.

His uncle, Yoland Jacquire, who was waiting for him in the car, first took Ashwin to Port Shepstone police station to open a case.

But the police took one look at the bleeding man and rushed him to Port Shepstone Regional Hospital, where he received five stitches, was X-rayed and admitted for overnight observation.

“I have followed all protocols and I believe the law must now take its course. I feel crime is getting worse and someone might get killed if nobody speaks out. I feel its my duty to get the message out,” said Ashwin.

No one has been arrested yet, and a case of assault of grievous bodily harm was opened.
