JUST IN: Umkomaas robbery suspect found in possession of firearms, police and army clothing

An AK47 assault rifle with 12 round of ammunition was also recovered during the search.

A man (55) who lives in the Toyana area near Umkomaas was heading home last Sunday evening when he was approached by a man whom he knew and who robbed of his 9mm pistol after hitting him on the head with a bottle.

Umkomaas police and the Umzinto K9 Unit went to the suspect’s house and searched the premises.

“A man in the house was found in possession of a 9mm pistol with three rounds of ammunition,” said provincial SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nqobile Gwala.

“An AK47 assault rifle and 12 rounds of ammunition were also found.”

Police also seized a police jacket, an army jacket, a pair of gloves and two 9mm magazines.

“Two suspects, a man and a woman, aged 38 and 45 years respectively, were arrested,” said Captain Gwala.

They will appear in the Umbumbulu Magistrate’s Court on charges of robbery as well as the possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition.
