For the third time in a row Southcity Christian College was crowned winner and keeping up to the winning spirit were Janzelle Keet, Tiffany Clinton and Inez Smit. Their topic ‘No Cellphone! How will I Survive?’ made them winners. The pupils were tutored by their teacher Danielle Williams.

The runners-up were Suid-Natal High B team: Michelle Kretzschmar, Rochelle Potgieter and Ankia Stander. Their very pertinent topic was ‘Smoke and Fly’, substance abuse especially dagga and marijuana, being a very serious problem affecting pupils today and they gave very feasible and realistic solutions to handle this serious challenge facing teenagers.
Best speaker was Siphe Booi from Creston College. Chief adjudicator, Barbie Meyer, gave very interesting and informative feedback to all who took part.
The club thanked Rotary Anns Jackie McDaniel and Robin Broide, both from the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo).
Cathy de Boer (vocational director of the Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast), congratulated all the speakers and pointed out that success is not in winning but in taking part and learning.
Thirty-eight years ago the Rotary Club of Durban Umgeni introduced a Team Speaking Competition for pupils in schools in the Durban area. The project grew and, in order to spread the competition wider, it was taken over by Rotary International District 9270 and now District 9370.
Every year each school is invited to enter one team of three pupils from grade 10 to 12. The pupils have to select a subject of their choice, research the subject and present it as a team. They must present a problem and collectively suggest a solution to that problem. Ideally they have to do this in 12 minutes.

The Daily News provides a floating trophy shield and cheque for R20 000, which is to be used to improve the facilities of an underprivileged school that is selected and nominated by the winning team. Southcity’s beneficiary school is Tholimfundo High School in Izingolweni. The Daily News also presents books to the first, second and third teams, to be placed in their respective libraries.
The Rotary Club of Hibiscus Coast (Margate and Uvongo) thanked all sponsors for making the competition a great success.
