Huge cache of stolen copper cable uncovered in Sezela

The sale of copper cables is an illegal but lucrative business for many.

A 37-year-old man is expected to appear in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court in connection with the theft of 117 kilograms of copper cabling.

He was arrested on Monday this week.

Following a tip-off, the Scottburgh SAPS Detectives Task Team  headed off to Sezela, where  two bags containing rolls of copper cable were recovered, along with a large quantity of cables and cable casings.

Some of the cable casings recovered have been identified as belonging to Eskom while other service providers have been notified to identify the remaining cable and casings. The site at which the cables were found appeared to have previously been used to burn casings from the copper cables.

“The sale of copper cables, which draws high returns in the scrap metal trade, has proven to be a lucrative business for many in the area,” said Scottburgh SAPS communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

Scottburgh and surrounding areas have experienced a number of electricity cuts which could be attributed to the theft of copper cables.
