A school teacher is in custody after running over a police constable and fleeing at a roadblock in Uvongo last Friday night.
The police constable is reportedly in a serious but stable condition.
Police from Margate SAPS were on duty at the roadblock in Marine Drive,Uvongo when a blue vehicle, travelling south, smashed into a police constable (40).

“The driver failed to stop and fled the scene,” said police spokesman Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid. The constable suffered two broken legs and head injuries and was admitted to ICU.
Last Saturday morning a man (33) reported to Port Edward police that he had ‘knocked into something’ the previous night and he was referred to Margate police station. “He was questioned, and when police realised what vehicle he was driving at the time, they accompanied him to a house where the said vehicle was found,” said Lt-Col Wiid.
The man was arrested. He told police that he was a teacher and was travelling from KwaMadlala near Southport to KwaNzimakwe near Port Edward when the accident happened.
The man will be charged with reckless and/or negligent driving and failure to stop after an accident. He is due to appear in the Ramsgate court today (Monday).
The car was impounded for forensic investigation.
