This week the cases dealt with included theft, speeding and a follow-up on last week’s cable theft case in which the accused was arrested and commendation was given to the Scottburgh Saps who recovered copper cables worth thousands.

• A 30-year-old man was arrested after stealing two shoe polishes valued at R88 from the Umkomaas Spar. He made his second appearance in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning on a charge of theft. Seeing that the man had no previous convictions, is temporarily unemployed and has a child to support, he was sentenced to pay a fine of R600 or serve three months’ imprisonment suspended for three years. Before the man left the court room, he expressed remorse for his actions and stated that he knew he had done a ‘terribly stupid thing’ and would not do it again.
• A young man stood before the court for speeding. He was said to have been driving at a speed of 224kmph. The case was postponed to April 12 and the man’s bail was extended.

• Lastly, the article ‘Cable cache uncovered’ in last week’s Mail was about a 37-year-old Malangeni man who was arrested in connection with theft of 117kgs of copper cables. After further investigation, it was discovered that the cables belonged to Eskom and are actually worth R200 000. The man was remanded back into police custody pending his next appearance on April 4 for bail application.
