Cops in the spotlight (2): Detectives put their lives at risk to arrest dangerous man

Shozi committed crimes in Port Shepstone and Hibberdene between 2013 and 2014.

* In December 2013, Shozi attacked a 17-year-old in Merlewood and raped her at knife point.

* In 2014, he attacked an 18-year-old girl and her 27-year-old male friend while they were walking on a road in Hibberdene area. Shozi stabbed the man, who later died and raped the teen.

He then grabbed the woman, dragged her into nearby bushes and raped and assaulted her.

D/Capt Govender began investigating and despite Shozi’s family being very hostile, persevered with his inquiry.

On June 2, 2014 – D/Sgt Ncwane and D/Sgt Gumede received information that Shozi was in Mfazazana near Hibberdene.

When they arrived at the house, he threatened them with a knife and also threw a pot containing boiling oil at the two policemen.

The officers fired shots in sef-defence, and Shozi was wounded and arrested. The Director of Public Prosecutions commended the investigating officers for their thorough investigation, and managing to arrest Shozi although their lives were also in danger.
