This week in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court:
• Two men were caught during the early hours of the morning roaming around Freeland Park. It was 2am when nearby security guards spotted them carrying gloves, screwdrivers and knives among other housebreaking implements.
When questioned as to why they were in possession of these items, the men claimed that they were on their way home and just passing by the area. They later said that they even wanted to do a little bit of shopping.
Police were called and the two were arrested. After appearing in court on Wednesday morning, they were released on warning and instructed to stay away from Freeland Park. They are to make their next court appearance on May 2.

• A man who was expected to appear in court towards the beginning of March failed to do so and a warrant of arrest was issued.
He was then brought in by police last Tuesday before his next appearance the following day. When questioned as to why he did not appear, the man explained he had been bitten by a dog and needed medical attention on that day.
His story was confirmed when he showed the court his injury. He was released and told to return for his next court hearing.

• An attorney was expected to be at court on Wednesday morning, not defending a client, but representing himself after he was charged with speeding.
The man was arrested last Sunday morning and claimed he was late for church. He failed to make his first appearance in court on Wednesday morning so a warrant was issued for his arrest.

• A Chichewa-speaking man had entered the republic without a permit. This case had been put on hold for quite some time as the court needed to find a suitable translator.
This having been done, the matter was addressed on Wednesday morning. The foreign national, from the Eastern side of Malawi near Mozambique, had been arrested on March 6 in the Umzinto district and had been in police custody ever since.
It was discovered that he had no previous convictions and that he was currently employed on a farm here. It also came to the court’s attention that the man had started a family here after having a child with a South African woman.
Taking all of this into consideration, he was sentenced to six months’ imprisonment, suspended for three years, unless he decided that he wanted to stay in the country, for which he would have to speak to an immigration officer and fill out the necessary application forms.
