A slip of the tongue lands housebreaking suspect in hot water at Scottburgh court

It was when he was asked to explain the presence of his fingerprints at the scene that things went wrong.

A bail application went wrong for an accused at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court when he inadvertently admitted to committing a crime. The man is facing charges of housebreaking with the intention to steal.

He also has a previous conviction for being in the possession of dagga, for which he was excused.

The 24-year-old appeared for a formal bail application and, after taking the oath to tell nothing but the truth, he took the stand.

He claimed to be a gardener and said this was how he made an honest living. He stated that he lived in Amahlongwa with his sister.

The sister, however, had previously told court officials that he no longer stayed with her and spent most of his time at a friend’s house. He then admitted that he did stay quite often with friends.

The accused then pleaded not guilty to the charge. When asked to explain why his fingerprints had been found at the scene, he replied: “There may be a few fingerprints at the house, because I did get into the house but didn’t steal anything as I couldn’t find anything to steal.”

He was then asked how he had managed to enter the house and, at this point, the Legal Aid representative asked for a short adjournment as he ‘was not feeling well’.

When court was back in session, the accused decided not to answer that question and abandoned his bail application.

He will now remain in custody until his next appearance on April 26. The case was postponed to allow statements to be given and consultation with the lawyer to take place.
