This week in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court, an accused kleptomaniac and an elderly woman found in the possession of dagga were among others in the docks:
• A woman, believed to be in her 60s, has been detained for shoplifting once again. She is apparently a vagrant and has been in the Scottburgh area, mainly Scott Street, since the middle of last year.
This is not the first time that she has appeared in court, always on the same charge – chocolate theft from a local grocery store. Following her last court appearance on April 24, a social worker had been appointed for consultation but, according to court officials, the accused had had an argument with the social worker and left.

Rearrested on April 30 after yet another shoplifting incident, she appeared in court last Wednesday, was granted Legal Aid and remanded back into police custody pending her next appearance on May 9.
• A 59-year-old woman was arrested after being found in the possession of 77 grams of dagga. She was granted Legal Aid and, as she had no previous convictions, was released on bail of R200. The accused will make her next appearance in court on May 18.
• Two men appeared facing charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm. One is 23 years old, unmarried with two children, unemployed and supported financially by his parents.
The second is 26 years old, unmarried, has one child and is supported by his mother. Both stated that they were able to afford bail of R300, which was then granted, together with Legal aid. The case was postponed to May 20 for witness statements. Both accused were warned not to interfere with the complainant.

• A man accused of theft to the value of R5 000, appeared last Wednesday morning. He was granted bail of R1 000, but could not pay. He told court officials that he did have R500 on him when he was initially arrested, but that had apparently been taken from him when he was detained. He stated that he was in no position to pay bail so was remanded back into custody until May 14.
