Hibberdene Happenings: Sadness lingers as more stalwarts die

Your scribe deeply regrets not having mentioned the deaths of two more pillars of the community in the last few weeks.

IT HAS been a sad few weeks for residents of Hibberdene. Your scribe deeply regrets not having mentioned the death of two more stalwarts of the community in the last few weeks, but she only became aware of their passing in the last few days.

Sam McDougall died at the end of April and sincere condolences go to his wife Judy and family, while Trevor Greeff died about two weeks ago. Sympathy goes to his wife Martha and members of the family. Both men were a pleasure to know and will be sadly missed.

Be enlightened

The Hare Krishna Service Group holds an enlightenment session at the Hibberdene Care Centre this Saturday (26th) at 3pm. All are most welcome to attend. Supper will be served. Contact Rajin Mahabeer at 082 8362758 for more details. Please note the change of venue for this month.

Sunday braai

All is set for Mizpah Church’s chicken braai this coming Sunday (27th) after the morning service. Should you not be partial to chicken, you are welcome to bring your own braai meat and a small salad to share. Otherwise, chicken will be provided for a small donation. All are welcome.

Breakfast is served

Your scribe has been assured that the Methodist men’s breakfast WILL take place, not only in June, but also in the immediate future. It will be held at the church on Saturday, June 2, at 7am, at a cost of only R20 per person.

Calling all teenagers

With only a few weeks left till the Lower South Coast Methodist Church’s Winter Camp, teenagers from grades 6 to 12 are reminded to contact Ken Walker at 082 3790656 or the local church office at 039 6992948 should they wish to attend.

The price is extremely reasonable. The camp will be at the Silver Oaks Retreat Centre at Marina Beach from June 23 to 27, a period of four nights.

The teens will enjoy a lovely break, with good food, entertainment, fellowship and a meaningful spiritual programme. The leadership team is extremely experienced and the young people will be in good hands.

Market day

A market day and bazaar will be held at Hibberdene Town Hall this Saturday, May 26th, from 9am to 3pm. There will be crafts, plants and toys on sale, not to mention the food, of which there will be plenty. Please roll up and support this bazaar. To book a stall, call 076 2228510 now.

Raise funds

Also, a craft market is being planned at 111 Pig and Whistle Drive in Clansthal on Sunday, June 10, between 9am and 2pm. Local traders and those from further afield take part and a variety of crafts, clothing, jewellery and refreshments are on offer.

Traders supply their own gazebos, tables and chairs, and proceeds go to various conservation initiatives. Please note that the venue is a private garden, so visiting dogs are not allowed. For more information, contact Liz at 083 5568108 or email lizc@scottburgh.co.za.

Ridiculous round-trip

Your scribe’s husband Steve endured an extremely nerve-wracking week recently. On arriving to renew his vehicle licence, he was informed that the bakkie was registered as a tow truck vehicle and a COR would have to be obtained before the licence could be issued, although the R1 000 plus had already been paid. A visit to the testing centre resulted in a COR being issued, but not before a visit to the Port Shepstone weighbridge was ordered. And that’s where the fun started – the local weighbridge was out of order, so it was suggested that he go to Scottburgh. Alas, Scottburgh’s was also not working, so it was put forward he travel to Winkelspruit’s where he was eventually helped! So what should have been a 40km round trip ended up being a 240km trip, with mounting frustration and a complete waste of petrol. Fortunately, everyone was ultra polite – otherwise he may have committed murder!

It’s a celebration

Galvasia Bhagwantha will celebrate her 88th birthday on Saturday with a party in the town hall and is wished a wonderful evening and a very happy year. Birthday wishes also go to Lalla Lategan and Tamryn Snyman (23rd), Mary Schutte, Cynthia du Randt (24th), Sanele James (24th), Andrew Barnard and Freda Carpenter (25th), Marlene Koekemoer and Tony Leite (26th), Debbie Fletcher (28th), Charmagne Howe, Elsa Sassenberg and Brentin Wandrag (29th) and Yvonne van Zyl (31st). Anniversaries will be celebrated by Anne-Marie and Jannie Oosthuizen (30th), and your scribe and Steve, who celebrate 54 years, also on the 30th. Remember that Lizzie must be kept busy with Hibberdene news, photos and snippets.
