Under the gavel in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court: Shoe buckle thief sentenced

Contempt of court concerns were also raised by the Magistrate.

Recently in the Scottburgh Magistrate’s court:

• A 29-year-old was arrested in Pennington on June 5 after being found in possession of one gram of dagga. He was cautioned and discharged with the dagga being forfeited to the state.

• A young man who was accused of theft appeared late at court. Magistrate Elsophie Botha pointed out that anyone found in contempt of court can be fined up to R5 000.

Contempt of court includes: Failing to remain silent and behave appropriately in a court room, refusing or disobeying court procedures such as not being punctual or not arriving at all, interfering with the orderly administration of justice, and not being dressed appropriately.

• An elderly woman, who was arrested several weeks ago for shoplifting, is still in police custody. The case is postponed until contact is made with her family.

• A young man who was charged with theft will appear for his formal bail application on June 13. He failed to attend his previous hearing, claiming to have been sick.

• After pleading guilty to a charge of housebreaking with the intent to steal and theft of shoe buckles, a young man was finally sentenced for his crimes earlier this month. On December 17 last year, the accused stole four bags of shoe buckles, believed to be worth R2 000, from a property in Park Rynie.

He was sentenced to a total of 18 months’ imprisonment of which 12 months is suspended for five years.
