Umtamvuna Views: Helga sets a fine example
About 35 guests enjoyed the snoek braai luncheon last Sunday.
Helga Motz of Mbabala Lodge turned 90 last Sunday, June 10th and is a fine example to everyone. Although she recently had a health setback, she is independent, sociable and takes an interest in a variety of activities.

When she plays bridge, she gives opponents a good ‘run for their money’. Helga was born in Germany and in her early 20s, fell in love with a local watch-maker. When he was offered a job in South Africa, they immediately got married and set off for the other side of the world. The newly-weds settled in Durban in 1954 and built up a very successful jewellery business. They retired to Port Edward in 1984. After Kurt died, she moved into Mbabala Lodge. Her friends organised a birthday party for her and about 35 guests enjoyed the snoek braai luncheon at the Mbabala clubhouse last Sunday.
Beautiful gardens
This is the final reminder to diarise the indigenous gardens in Leisure Bay, which will be open to visitors this Saturday and Sunday from 10am. The cost is R30 per person, which allows entry to all the gardens. Visitors can enjoy refreshments and buy plants and books for a donation. All monies raised go to the Leisure Bay Conservancy. Make a day of it and revel in the beauty of these very different gardens. The gardens are: 1311 Fisherman Drive (Steph 083 3029382); 1043 Fisherman Drive (Merle 083 4075219); 546 St Ives Road (Libby 082 5616993) and 1668 Seaton Road (Mark 082 4282087).
Lucky kitty
Last week, caterer and restaurant manager, Dannette Stewart came across a pitiful sight in Munster – A tiny scrap of fur that turned out to be a very sick, almost dead, feral kitten. The kitten was in such a poor state that she decided it would be best to have it euthanised, but couldn’t afford the cost.

She bought some special kitten formula and decided to try and help the little mite. Surprisingly it survived the night! The next morning she took the kitten, which had such a serious eye infection, it may be permanently blind, to Dr Dave Watson. Dr Dave treated, advised and supported her effort and ‘Rocky’ the plucky little feline is starting to rally. Dannette refers to Dr Dave as the community’s ‘Animal Angel’ and she is hugely grateful to him.
No water … again, and again
There are no words to express the dismal failure of Ugu to provide water. There have been continual empty promises with little relief for frustrated residents. I have no words except to say ‘What an absolute DISGRACE!’
Proud of our ‘Bokke’
What an amazing string of successes for South African sport! Last weekend saw a series of fantastic results from our sportsmen and women.
The Springboks, led by Siya Kolisi, recorded a historic win against England in Johannesburg last Saturday. The Blitzbokke won the World Rugby Sevens Series after beating England last Sunday night.
Go Bokke! And at the Comrades Marathon last Sunday, winners’ medals were awarded to South Africans. Ann Ashworth, a Johannesburg lawyer, won the women’s section, and Bongumusa Mthembu from Bulwer, KZN, won the men’s for the second consecutive year. All news to Philippa.
