Man sentenced for assaulting elderly security guard at Charles Hoffe Park

It was one man's word against another as to who started the fight.

After pleading guilty to a charge of assault and intent to do grievous bodily harm, a man was sentenced at the Scottburgh Magistrate’s Court last Tuesday.

A case of assault was opened against the accused after he had assaulted a 64-year-old security guard at Charles Hoffe Park, where they both reside, on the evening of March 9.

The fight started when the accused and his wife arrived late at the premises and the security guard was in the process of opening the boom gate when the accused decided to do it himself.

A heated confrontation occurred between the accused and the security guard.

It was one man’s word against another as to who started the fight, the accused claiming that the complainant had said he would kill him, which had provoked him to retaliate.

Court officials conducted a cross examination and made a ruling after seeing cctv footage showing the accused chasing the complainant after hitting him and disarming him of his knobkerrie.

The accused was then sentenced to pay a fine of R3 000 or face four months’ imprisonment, suspended for a period of three years.
