Truck driver trapped after accident at Ellingham on the R612 Ixopo Main Road

The jaws of life had to be used to cut open the cab and extricate the driver.

A Mercedes Benz horse and trailer articulated truck overturned into the bush alongside the R612 Ixopo Main Road at Ellingham on Monday this week, trapping the driver in the vehicle

Constable Delani Jiji of the Umzinto Saps responded to the scene.

“Officials of Durban Metro, Ugu Disaster Management, Paramedics, Umdoni Fire and Rescue as well as the Park Rynie Road Traffic Inspectorate (RTI) also responded, and the jaws of life had to be used to cut up the cab and extricate the driver who sustained serious multiple injuries,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Vincent Pandarum.

The driver, who is from Park Rynie, was treated by paramedics at the scene before being taken to a Durban hospital by a private ambulance.

The cause of the accident is still unknown and a case of reckless and negligent driving is being investigated by the Umzinto Saps Detective Service.
