According to the union, the strike started on Monday this week and the workers demand a minimum salary of R3 500 per month, a salary increase of R600 for workers earning above R3 500 per month and a 13th cheque/annual bonus among several other demands.

On Monday workers burnt tyres at the entrance to the brick and block business demanding that their grievances be heard by the company.

Windows and a door were damaged at the company.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said a group of people had been protesting outside the premises since Monday this week . “On Tuesday morning they set an old truck alight on the premises. They also damaged some of the windows of a building and burnt pallets. The protest is allegedly about salary increases,” she said. A case of malicious damage to property will be opened.

Meanwhile the management of Amafongos Brick and Block are not in favour of the current industrial action.

“We do not condone the damage to our property and the violent behaviour of various members of the union. The company recognises the right of our staff members to take part in an industrial strike but should be done as a peaceful procedure.

Staff gathered outside the brick and block company on Monday this week.

“We have tried our best to avoid this unfortunate situation, however the demands from the union are extreme and unreasonable,” said company spokesman, Leanne Naidoo.

Workers at the brick and block company near St Faith’s downed tools and resorted to a strike over wage negotiations on Monday this week.

The company has apologised to its customers and suppliers. It has also urged its employees to return to work as soon as possible and to engage with the relevant parties to bring a peaceful resolution to the current situation.
