The man (31) was attacked and stabbed several times in the buttocks. The attackers then fled with the man’s cash, a cellphone and various bank cards. The woman was unharmed.

Police spokesman, Lieutenant-Colonel Zandra Wiid said Sergeant Ronald Cwele and Sgt Orlando Nyawose from K9 Port Shepstone used patrol dog Dexter to follow the spoor towards Marburg for more than a kilometre.

“When Sgt Cwele spotted one of the suspects, he tried to effect an arrest. The man however resisted, and attempted to stab the policeman. Sgt Cwele managed to disarm the suspect and confiscated a knife. After a scuffle, he arrested the man. Sgt Cwele was injured on the forearm,” said Lt-Col Wiid.

Sergeant Ronald Cwele had a close call when a suspect attempted to stab him during the course of an arrest.

Sergeant Nyawose and Dexter continued following the second suspect’s spoor but the scent was lost in the thick bush.

The arrested suspect will face a charge of aggravated robbery, resisting arrest and assault on a police officer. He is due to appear in Port Shepstone Court soon.
