Police warning: Beware of bank fraudsters

Police are investigating a number of cases relating to unauthorised money transfers.

Port Shepstone police have issued a warning to be wary of fraudsters pretending to be bank personnel.

A statement released by the Port Shepstone Police Services states that a number of fraud cases are currently being  investigated where  money was withdrawn/transferred from complainants account.

Detective Warrant officer Heidi van der Merwe is investigating these cases.

“The fraudsters contacted the complainants by telephone pretending to be employees from certain banks. They would then tell the account holder that they have noticed  certain fraudulent transactions of their bank accounts, which in fact is untrue. They would then request confirmation of the bank account number in order to ‘rectify’  the problem,” read the statement.

Port Shepstone Spokesman Lieut-Col Zandra Wiid said under no circumstances must anyone provide their personal or bank details over the telephone.

“The community is advised to inform the caller they will visit the bank themselves.”
