Hibberdene Happenings: Terence talks at men’s breakfast
Terence Olivier of Rainbow Warriors gave an enthralling talk about feral cats.
ALTHOUGH not too well attended, the Methodist men’s breakfast was most interesting, with Terence Olivier of Rainbow Warriors giving an enthralling talk on the huge problem of dealing with feral cats along the coast especially, with feral dogs creating more of a problem in the hinterland.

Great success
Last Saturday’s Mtwalume flea and craft market was, as per normal, a great success with a handsome donation of winter warmth goods being handed over to Pastor Johan Nel for the outreach work in his ministry.
Lucky winners
The Lions’ lucky draw was held recently and the winners were: Tiago’s – Cecilia van Staden; Fifi’s Fresh Fish – Ernie Hope; Salon Marguerite – Ronnie de Haas; Jolly Roger Fun Pub – Sue Thomas; Hibberdene Pharmacy – Barbara Wolmarans; and the Christmas cake – Katie Scapin. Katie has been extremely lucky with winning the Christmas cake and should have enough stock to set up shop on her own. The sponsors are thanked and the prize-winners congratulated.

The Lions will celebrate Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday by holding the next eye clinic on the great man’s special day. Anyone wishing to book an appointment should get in touch with your scribe at 073 1653961.
Do your bit
Hibberdene Lions Club and Pick n Pay Hibberdene are joining forces this Friday, Saturday and Sunday to collect food for the needy in celebration of Mandela Day. The main beneficiary of the collection will be the Sacred Heart Children’s Home, where some 80 orphans between the ages of five and 16 years will benefit from your generosity. If you would like to spare ‘100 minutes for Mandela’ and assist the Lions with the collection, please contact Susan at 082 5649815.
Sincere condolences
Sympathy is extended to Bheki and Bongi Mpunzana on the death of Bheki’s brother and to Dorothy and Andries van Biljon on the death of Dorothy’s step-dad Chris Loots, both of whom died a couple of weeks ago.
Happy occasions
Margaret and Charlie Smith have returned home after spending a few months in England and Scotland and, from all accounts, had a wonderful time away. Birthday wishes for the week go to Elize Gomez (11th), Stan Sackett, 88 on the 12th, Alex Galbraith (15th) and Amanda Vermeulen, Don Aldridge, Clive Fischer and Steve Coulson (16th).
Incredible sightings
There has been a tremendous amount of whale activity in the area of late, with absolutely magnificent displays of the great creatures swimming and breaching at all times of the day. It is beautiful to watch and whale-watchers have been having a ‘whale’ of a time. Unfortunately the flocks of gannets and other sea birds don’t appear to be as prevalent as in previous years, but the spectacle still remains awesome. Fishermen have been kept on the hop, it appears, and judging from comments made by those passing by your scribe’s home, catches have been good. All in all, the holiday season seems to have been a hive of activity so far. Congratulations to those who were lucky in the Vodacom Durban July. Your scribe drew a horse in the office sweep, and although it was a rank outsider, the horse did not disgrace itself and is not still running!
