Mariamman prayer grand festival to be celebrated by Tamils soon
One of the grandest festivals of the South Indian community is the Mariamman prayer (porridge prayer).
One of the grandest festivals of the South Indian community is the Mariamman prayer (porridge prayer). The word Mari has a Tamil origin meaning ‘rain’ and the Tamil word Amman means ‘mother’. She was worshipped by the ancient Tamils as she was believed to bring rain and hence prosperity to them as their vegetation was mainly dependent upon rain.

The following temples will be observing this prayer:
The Port Shepstone Tamil Association will hold its annual Maha Mariamman prayer at the temple on Sunday, July 29 at 10am. Everyone is welcome to join in paying homage to the divine Mother Mariamman. Lunch will be served. For more information contact Bobby Naidoo at 081 8915136.
The Maha Vishnu Temple will hold its Maha Mariamman prayer on Sunday, July 22 from 10.30am. All are welcome. The chariot will also go around the district of Port Shepstone on Sunday, July 22.
The Umbango Sri Siva Soobramaniar Alayam’s Maha Mariamman prayer takes place on Sunday, July 22 with a hawan from 7.30am. Thereafter bhajans will be rendered. Lunch will be served and all are welcome. Contact Jason Govender for Garagum bookings at 084 2508875. All devotees who wish to carry Garagums must bring their own brass or clay pots.
Flag hoisting will commence on Friday, July 20.
