Four ANC Lower South Coast region members were elected into the party’s Provincial Executive Committee (PEC) during the ANC provincial conference held at the Durban University of Technology last weekend.

The new unity slate, made up of leaders from both ANC factions, made a ‘clean sweep’ of the three contested top five positions that were up for grabs.
During the conference a total of 1 769 delegates took part in the voting, which saw Economic Development MEC Sihle Zikalala elected unopposed as chairman, Corporate Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube-Ncube elected as treasurer and the former ANC provincial spokesman Mdumiseni Ntuli elected secretary.
LSC region member Peggy Nkonyeni, who had resigned from the party’s PEC following her removal as MEC for Education in 2016, was among those who made the list, together with Sibongile Khathi, Nontembeko Boyce and Sboniso Duma.

The party’s local chairman Mondli Chiliza and regional convenor Mzwandile Mkhwanazi, did not make it to the list.
However, insiders claim Mr Mkhwanazi had made it to the top 30 but, due to gender equality issues, had to be sacrificed to allow a woman into the PEC.
Addressing the conference, president Cyril Ramaphosa congratulated delegates and the new leadership for working together despite the deep-rooted divisions in the ANC in the province.
Mr Ramaphosa reportedly said the conference had succeeded despite the province being “long divided”.
All concerned were also congratulated by both the local ANC Youth League and ANC.

According to local ANCYL spokesman Teddy Hlophe, the election of the KwaZulu Natal PEC comes at a time when there are many challenges facing the province and the rest of the country.
Mr Hlophe said the ANCYL sent good wishes to all those elected.
ANC spokesman Selvan Chetty said the party was pleased and confident that the election of regional leaders to the PEC will strengthen their ability to consolidate their efforts to build a stronger, younger and united regional leadership which will hold the fort through the next phase.
