Lots of ‘horsing’ around at Shafts’ donkey derby in Uvongo
Sharmaine van der Mescht was unanimously voted best dressed woman and Sam Graham took the men's title.
The going was good at the recent annual Shafts‘ Donkey Derby held at the Uvongo Tennis Club ‘Track’.
Please note neither actual horses nor donkeys participated – the runners were of the Turbo Turnip, Usain Spud, Carrot Top and Broccoli Balboa variety.
Stipendary steward Peter de Vries inspected the line-up to ensure only vegetables were used by the owners.
Barrie the Bent Bookie Willis was assisted by Heather the Treasure of a Treasurer van Rooyen to run the tote.
No punters lost their shirts. But some went home with lighter wallets, others with heavier purses.
Paul Mr Entertainment Korb aka Ernie Duffield provided the race commentary.
Shafts’ chairperson, Colleen Haggard, said that all races were in honour of dear members whom they lost over the past year.
Howard Osborne Oaks, Louis Fouche Derby, William van Rooyen Memorial Stakes, Rob Williams Classic and the Barbara Sink Grand National.
“It was good to have huge support from members and visitors. Thank you for being our racegoers,” said Colleen.

While Lady Brinjal owned by Janet Hunter was declared the coolest nag on the course.
Shafts, which is Self Help Association for the Seniors is a fabulous group of folk who meet up regularly and have an awful lot of fun!
