Ugu’s jukskei team brings in gold at Indigenous Games
The team defended its title after taking top spot last year.
IT was not all doom and gloom for the indigenous team that represented Ugu District Municipality in the annual Provincial Indigenous Games. The jukskei A team, captained by national stalwart Annatjie van der Merwe of Umtentweni, defended its title by winning gold in the 2018 edition of the games, held at Arbor Park stadium in Newcastle last weekend.

The team had won gold in Ladysmith last year. So what makes this team ‘tick’? “Practice, practice and more practice,” said Annatjie, who will captain the KwaZulu-Natal team in Polokwane later next month. She said they have regular practices at Hibiscus Retirement Village every Wednesday.
Ugu had two teams in the competition, an A and a B side. Other teams came from Umzinyathi, King Cetshwayo, Amajuba and Ethekwini.
“We played 5 games and registered highest points to win us gold. We are so proud of this achievment,” added Tom Prins, one of the team members.
The KZN Department of Sport and Recreation promotes the preservation of the indigenous games from the past played by different communities.
This is done in partnership with the KZN Indigenous Games Council by reviving games like dibeke, incuva, amagenda, induku, drie stokkies, jukskei, inqathu, mlabalaba and khokho.
Coach of Ugu A team Willie Coetzee has been chosen as coach for KZN at national level.
