WATCH: No cross too heavy to bear as Patrick walks for the love of Jesus

He is heading for Port Elizabeth, spreading his message as he goes.

Patrick Styles (57) from Koster, Rustenburg is on an epic mission passing the love of Jesus to everyone he has met since his trip began on August 22.

Many South Coasters may have noticed him walking along the N2 and along the R102, carrying a cross weighing about 60kg.

The tall, grey haired man left his farming community with a huge wooden cross attached to a pair of bicycle wheels.

He is en route to Port Elizabeth and is doing this walk, he says, “for the love of Jesus”. Patrick worked on the mines for 33 years and one day, while praying at home after he retired, he decided he wanted to do more for God and  so the idea of walking with the cross was born.

This is his second trip through KwaZulu-Natal. Passing the Herald office today (Monday), Patrick said his walk so far has been good.

“A lot of people have been great and are helping with accommodation along the way. I try to do about 15 to 20kms a day, all in the name of Jesus. This is my fifth walk, and many people have come up to me and asked for prayer which I always do.”

He carries a sleeping bag, a cooler box and a bag of clothes which is attached at the back of the cross.

“My wife has been very supportive of my walking. We call each other everyday so she is updated on my location. I have been helped by many people along the way. I was almost mugged on the N3 near Mooi River by four men, but people nearby came and assisted me. It has been a very positive journey so far but I have seen a number of homeless people. This worries me and he hopes the situation will change through God’s work. ”

He loves travelling and believes this is a great way to see the country, meet people and pass along the message of Jesus. He will be heading to Margate by tomorrow (Tuesday) or Wednesday and is set to do some laundry. He hasn’t really decided on which route to take for the next leg of his walk  – via the Wild Coast or the N2 to Kokstad.

Once in Port Elizabeth he will head back home, taking the inland route.
