Brand new, state-of-the-art social development offices were opened in Gamalakhe last Saturday.
The fully equipped offices, which cost some R18-million, were officially opened by KwaZulu-Natal Social Development MEC Weziwe Thusi, Finance MEC Belinda Scott and Transport MEC Mxolisi Kaunda.

According to MEC Thusi, the new office block was part of government’s drive to improve the quality of service delivery and infrastructure in the area.
She said over the past few years, the department had made great strides in reducing infrastructure backlog and ensuring that people received good quality services near their places of residence.
The new offices have consultation rooms, two boardrooms, public ablution facilities and administration offices, among others. The building also houses the departmental district offices.
“When I joined the department, I noticed that our infrastructure was in a bad state. In some cases, our employees were operating from dilapidated buildings, some from makeshift offices and some were operating from places where there were no formal offices at all. The situation impacted negatively on the quality of services we were delivering to our people. It also compromised their dignity and the dignity of the public, we therefore had to urgently work out a turnaround plan,” said MEC Thusi.
“Gamalakhe is faced with the scourge of social ills. With the construction of these offices, we encourage the public to use this opportunity to work with the department and government in dealing with abuse of alcohol and drugs, social crime, teenage pregnancies, gender-based violence and many other social ills.”
A roadblock was held in Gamalakhe as part of Transport Month. Ugu mayor Mondli Chiliza, Umzumbe mayor Sizwe Ngcobo and some councillors took part in the proceedings.
