Passionate about his community, Peter Brereton, chairman of the Port Edward Ratepayers’ Association, and his small but dedicated team, transformed a vacant piece of land near the Methodist Church earlier this year, and the garden has since flourished and includes a hydroponic system.
“Community members take it in turns to do the daily work in the garden, and help sell the produce. This is a wonderful community initiative, a lovely feel-good story,” he said.
They have donated two of their smaller water tanks for use at the beachfront toilets, just in case they have a dry spell in December. Marlin Ski-boat Club paid for the pump and Port Edward NSRI sponsored the plumbing.
Mr Brereton says crime has dramatically decreased in the area since a sector policing forum was set up.
“We have a meeting with the police twice a month. We recently had six arrests in one week and these were confirmed housebreakers.”
Peter says they have a very exciting plan to entice visitors into their area, so watch this space.
On December 23, the association is holding a family fun day, including fishing, bowls, shot-gun golf and a walk/cycle.
“The whole family can come along and share the joys of Port Edward,” he said. More details of this event will be published closer to the time.
