Jozi finds a home in Jozi

The three-legged dog could not have wished for a better Christmas present.

The tale of a three-legged dog named Jozi who crept into readers’ hearts has ended on a happy note.

Jozi, who had her right front leg amputated after an accident, was rescued by Wendy Millward when the caretaker of a holiday cottage in Sea Park was asked by the landlord to get rid of her.

Jozi was taken to Harmony Hill Rescue and in February this year, Penny Taylor and Renate Haussmann sent out a request for help.

They wanted to purchase a wheeled canine cart as Jozi’s left front leg was carrying most of her body weight, putting too much stress on it.

Thanks to many kind-hearted members of the public enough money was raised, and Jozi was given a new lease on life with a custom-made wheeled canine cart, imported from the United States.

Shortly after the Herald published the story of Jozi needing a stable and loving home, journalist Jaco Nel picked up on the story and wrote an article about her, which was published in the Rapport.

Shaun and Maria Martins saw the article and offered her a home in Johannesburg.

Renate drove ‘Jozi to Jozi’ to meet her new family last week.

Maria said they were happy to have this loving, friendly girl in their pack, adding that Jozi was adapting well and had even trotted after some chickens.

“She’s still very wary and getting used to her new environment and routine, but she’s following us around and coming when she is called.”

Jozi’s first physio appointment has been booked, and this will help get her into a rehabilitation and exercise routine.

“We thank everyone who helped us along our journey with Jozi. Without their financial help she would not have her own set of ‘wheels’ and the possibility of a relatively normal life. Bless all of you, especially over this festive season.

“We will miss her happy face at Harmony Hill but wish her, Maria and Shaun a happy future,” said Renate.

Penny added that Jozi couldn’t have been given any better a Christmas present than a brand new beginning and a future bursting with love and promise.
