Four dead in New Year’s Day crashes

The bakkie was carrying 27 people.

Four people lost their lives in two separate accidents on Tuesday this week (New Year’s Day).

Two people were killed and 25 injured in an accident in the upper Melville area.

Police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge said that the driver (38) of a bakkie which was carrying 27 passengers lost control after rounding a bend and the vehicle slammed into the railings.

“Two teenage girls were pronounced dead at the scene. Twenty-five other people, including the driver, were injured and taken to hospital.”

Southport police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and reckless and negligent driving.

In a separate incident, two people died in a head-on collision between a bakkie and a car on the Mpenjathi River bridge near Trafalgar on Tuesday night.

It is believed that the passenger in the bakkie died at the scene while the passenger in the vehicle died en route to hospital.

Police are investigating the cause of the accident.
