Police warn of remote jamming

Check that doors are securely locked before walking off.

Police have issued a warning to motorists to double-check that their vehicles are locked when they park in public places.

The warning comes after several cases of vehicle theft and items stolen from vehicles were reported to Port Shepstone police.

Criminals make use of remote jamming devices which prevent the vehicle from being locked properly, which enables them to steal items from the vehicle – or even the vehicle itself.

“Criminals may loiter nearby in order to tamper with the locking system on a parked vehicle,” said police spokesman, Captain Petros Mpinge.

As a preventative measure you are advised to:

* Avoid parking your vehicle where there are no security officers.

* Make sure that all the doors and windows are properly locked.

* Try to fit an alarm and/or anti-theft device to your car.

Remove detachable radios and removable radio faces when getting out of the car.

* Store luggage in the boot of the car where it is out of sight.

* Do not leave your handbag/briefcase or any valuables visible in the vehicle.

* Do not leave your firearm in the cubbyhole – this is against the law.
