In her resignation letter, of which the Herald has a copy, Ms Mgijima does not give reasons for her resignation.
According to municipal spokesman Sabelo Ncwane, Ms Mgijima’s resignation was effective from February 22, 2019.
It is believed that council met last Thursday, after having received the letter, to discuss the matter.
“Council resolved to accept her resignation and appoint Zanele Mngadi as acting municipal manager for the next three months.”
Ms Mngadi was seconded by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs MEC Nomusa Dube Ncube.
Mayor Sizwe Ngcobo thanked Ms Mgijima for her contribution to the development of the municipality, and wished her luck in her future endeavours.
Prior to her resignation, Ms Mgijima had applied for three months’ special leave which had been granted by council.
The mayor said council had been awaiting her return to work when the letter was received.
Last year, the Umzumbe business forum brought operations at the municipality to a halt, demanding that Ms Mgijima resign.
The IFP had also marched to the municipality asking for her to step down.
Efforts to get hold of Ms Mgijima for comment were unsucessful.
