The cleanup campaign was part of president Cyril Ramaphosa’s national call for communities to keep their cities clean and to rid the country of all illegal dumping and littering.

Mayors, Mondli Chiliza of Ugu and Sizwe Ngcobo of Umzumbe were joined by Mthwalume Taxi Association members who all played their part in getting the small town clean.

The teams removed bags of plastic filled with bottles, papers and grass weeds etcetera.

According to Umzumbe mayor, the campaign plays a pivotal role in preserving the environment and encouraging communities to keep their towns clean.

“We need to exercise correct waste management practices, prioritise the environment and instill a culture of a clean environment at all times,” mayor Ngcobo said.
