MAX, a 10-year-old Labrador/Rottweiler cross, literally took a bullet for his family during a foiled house robbery in Pennington last Thursday.
His owners, who prefer not to be identified, are extremely grateful to Max for protecting them and his four furry siblings., saying it was only thanks to Max’s courage that they were alive to tell the tale.

“He is such a gentle dog – Max has always been my shadow and I would jokingly say that he would kill for me, and instead he nearly died for us,” said the wife.
The Pennington couple was relaxing in their lounge last Thursday evening when a man entered their home through the lounge door. Without a word, he pointed a firearm at the husband.
Max, who was sitting between his owners, seemed to realise what was going on and began growling at the intruder.
A second gunman entered the room and also trained a gun on the husband. Max growled again, when he got to his feet he startled one of the intruders who began firing shots. The quick-thinking husband grabbed a nearby torch and shone the beam into the shooter’s face, temporarily blinding him and giving his wife time to activate the house alarm. The robbers all fled in their vehicle which was parked right outside the house. “Nothing was stolen,” said Scottburgh Saps communications officer, Captain Adam Francis.
In no time at all, the close-knit Pennington community, Pennington Crime Watch, Gladiator Security Services and Scottburgh Saps came to the family’s assistance.
The couple then discovered a trail of blood and found their beloved Max lying in a pool of blood – he had been shot.
A bullet grazed his mouth and exited through his neck, while another had lodged in his back leg. Another shot had ricocheted off of the floor tiles and struck him in the back.
A neighbour quickly rushed Max to Scottburgh Veterinary Clinic where he was treated, undergoing blood transfusions, x-rays and surgery.
Max the superhero returned home on Saturday to convalesce. The medical bills to save Max’s life are a whopping R10 000. Of that, R3 000 has already been paid but the family needs assistance with the shortfall. Anyone who would like to help can contact the Mail. If you have information relating to the attempted robbery, contact Detective Sergeant Dillon Khamisa at 039-9781900.
Captain Francis appeals to the public to ensure that security gates are kept locked at all times and that all precautionary measures are taken to protect yourself and your property.
