Telegus celebrate new year in style

A programme of song, dance and light comedy was enjoyed by guests.

Telugu New Year (Ugadi) is celebrated every year with lots of fervour and enthusiasm. Ugadi is observed as the beginning of a new calendar in the countries of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. A number of traditions are observed on this day throughout the country and in those places, such as the South Coast, where people celebrate Ugadi New Year with great fanfare.

On the local front, celebrations took place at the Port Shepstone and District Andhra Sabha last Saturday.

Chief coordinator of the Ugadi celebrations, Kantha Chellan planned a programme of song, dance and light comedy. She told the Herald that local and cultural organisations, as well as members and families of the Andhra community, enjoyed the wonderful entertainment on offer.

Deandre, Susie and Syrana Naidoo with Jerome and Jasmin Moodley, in front.

“The entertaining songs and dances involved children, as young as six, to grandparents (aged 70+) who enthralled the audience, while the hilarious comedy sketch by three local teachers moonlighting as comedians had the audience in stitches,” said Mrs Chellan.

Sastri and Sharon Naidoo.

The three local teachers, Rags Govender, Jason Govender and Basil Moodley stole the show with their fancy wigs, outlandish clothing and ‘Bala and Peru’ show antics.

After the formalities,  supper was served.
