RDP houses remain half-built in Umdoni

Some of the houses only have a foundation, some have walls, but no roof.

The Department of Transport and Human Settlements has provided no comment about the incomplete RDP houses in Mgobhozini area in Ward 18 under Umdoni Local Municipality.

A number of RDP house have been standing half-built for at least two years, and no one can provide an explanation as to why the project stalled.

Some of the houses just have foundations and some have walls, but no roof.

Some families have decided to put a roof on so that they can move in. However, others cannot afford to such as the Khwela family, who is still living in a shack.

According to Nokuthula Khwela, her family has been waiting for at least two years for her partly-built RDP house to be completed.

Her family of four was excited when the building started, but for now it’s just four walls without a roof, doors or windows.

Water gushes through the roof when it rains.

“We currently live in a shack and when it rains it floods. All I am asking for is that the department to return and put a roof on the house so we can move in.”

Furthermore, Khwela said the family has lost all hope of moving into a proper house.

Community activist Philani Msabala has tried to help, but to no avail.

Msabala said the Khwelas are not the only family with a similar problem as there are other half-built RDP houses.

“We are pleading with the government to complete the project. These people are heartbroken because they have unfinished houses in their yards.”
